Alexander Gustafsson made a believer out of many this past weekend when he went 25 minutes with Jon Jones.
I feel that he won the fight as do many others, but in the end Jones keeps his UFC title.
Gustafsson, who suffered just his second career loss, told the post-fight show that he now knows what it will take to climb to the top of the mountain.
“I learned a lot from this fight,” he said. “He’s the champ. To take the belt from the champ, you have to finish him.
“The biggest lesson is I have to push the pace harder. I just did what I thought I could do and it wasn’t enough.”
Gustafsson seemed to be in control through the first few rounds, but Jones was able to dig deep and put together his patented offense in the “championship rounds.”
“I will come back stronger and better,” Gustafsson stated. “I’m disappointed, but I’m very proud of what I did.”
As for an immediate rematch, that would be exactly what the Swede would want if the UFC agrees with him.
“Absolutely, I want a rematch right away. But, it’s up to the UFC. It’s an honor to fight Jon,” Gustafsson said.
