Donald Cerrone might be sticking around at welterweight after all.
A 170-pound clash between the fan favorite and Leon Edwards is in the works to headline the UFC’s upcoming Fight Night event in Singapore on June 23, MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reported Tuesday.
The UFC should make the matchup official soon, as both fighters are reportedlyscheduled to appear at the promotion’s 25th anniversary presser on Friday.
Cerrone had publicly entertained returning to lightweight after Darren Till handed him a third straight loss with a first-round TKO at UFC Fight Night 118 in October, and did the same once he snapped the skid by treating Yancy Medeiros to an identical fate in February. But it appears he’ll take Edwards up on his year-old callout.
The 26-year-old Edwards challenged Cerrone following his decision win over Vicente Luque last March, and will now face him on a five-fight win streak. The Birmingham native most recently scored a buzzer-beating TKO of Peter Sobotta at UFC Fight Night 127 less than three weeks ago, one he followed with a fruitless callout of Till – who has since signed on to face Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in his native Liverpool next month.
