The Fighters Hub caught up with Ivo Dos Santos to discuss his upcoming fight at AFC 5 on 10 May.
Ivo is currently fighting out of Evolve MMA Thomastown training under Pat Rottura
Check out what Ivo had to say:
The Fighters Hub: How did you get involved in MMA?
Ivo: I became a fan of MMA via my Judo background. I trained Judo in Japan for over 10 years, during this time I was introduced to PRIDE which looked really cool. I was a massive boxing fan as a teenager, which turned into a hybrid interest of MMA. I started cross-training BJJ to support Judo and through that my interest continued to grow.I had a fight on a small card through the Style Wars promotion a few years ago. I fought a Thai boxer and I really had no kickboxing experience, which made it interesting. After my debut fight I wanted to keep building.
From the perspective of Judo I am a Third Dan Black Belt and competed at the London Olympic Games. I am currently ranked #1 in Australia and #13 in the World.
The Fighters Hub: What sort of a fighter would you say you are?
Ivo: I am definitely a scramble-based brawler. My striking is in your face; I’m not the most technical but I’ll stand in pocket and throw. On the ground I like to push the pace. I have a really physical style; because of my background my core strength is excellent so I have the ability to push people around.
The Fighters Hub: How has your training camp been for your upcoming fight?
Ivo:My training camp has been really good. This is the first time in my career that I have been able to dedicate 3-4 months to my training camp. Since the start of the year I have been training 7-9 times per week focussing on grappling, striking and wrestling while continuing to refine my Judo. It’s been hard at times because with some of the disciplines feel like a beginner but I work hard and its paying off. I’ve also been doing a few sessions at Dominance MMA with Rusty McBride. They have opened their doors to help me with my grappling and striking.
The Fighters Hub: Your fighting Rory O’Connell, what do you know about him?
Ivo: I know Rory trains at a top-level gym in Newcastle. Great fighters like Richie Vass train at his gym so he has been working with some high level guys. Rory has won quiet convincingly in his past fights. He did lose a decision in CFC to Rob Lisita so he can hang with the top guys. He has hammered guys below him and hung in there with tough guys so he will definitely be a challenging opponent.
I’m expecting a difficult fight but I feel I have a physical advantage. I’m ready for a war.
The Fighters Hub: What tactics do you plan to employ in this fight?
Ivo: Without giving too much away I’m planning on controlling the distance. I’ll be in his face standing or smothering him on the ground. I plan to use my grappling background to control position. I’m going to control the elements that I can control, stay in his face, tire him out and finish if possible.
The Fighters Hub: How do you see this fight going?
Ivo: 1st round submission.
The Fighters Hub: What can we expect to see from you in the future?
Ivo: I’m continuing to transition from Judo to MMA so I’ll keep pushing forward. I want to develop the skills I need to challenge for titles domestically; and then who knows where it goes. The AFC provides a pathway to Asia Pacific and USA.
I want to test myself against the best of the best. I know I’m not near that right now but I’ll keep plugging away and climb the ladder in Australian MMA. There are good international fighters coming to Australia now so there is a huge range of potential fights. I want to deserve to be tested. There’s lots of training ahead but I’m looking forward to it.
The Fighters Hub: Anyone you’d like to thank?
Ivo: Yeah I’d like to think Evolve MMA, their doors are always open to me. I’d also like to thank Dominance MMA, Dave and the guys have really helped me prepare for this fight. And of course the million and one training partners I have had in this camp.
