Leslie Smith dropping to flyweight for Invicta FC 6

Invicta FC today announced via press release that they have signed Leslie “The Peacemaker” Smith to a new multi-fight deal.  The press release also stated that Smith will drop from the bantamweight (135 pounds) division to the flyweight (125 pounds) division and take on Jennifer Maia in a number 1 contender’s match.  The winner of the fight will get a future shot at Invicta Flyweight Champion Barb Honchak.

“We are excited to bring Leslie under the Invicta Fighting Championships umbrella for the long-term and to watch her compete in a new weight class that is becoming super competitive in our promotion,” said Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp.  “Since we launched our live event series last year, Leslie has demonstrated incredible tenacity and athleticism by putting on some of the most memorable fights in our cage.  She is a true warrior as is her opponent Jennifer Maia, so we are looking forward to an explosive matchup between two of the sport’s stars on what will be Invicta FC’s biggest fight card to date.”

Leslie Smith (5-3-1 MMA, 2-1-1 Invicta) has had a successful run thus far in the Invicta cage, winning two “Fight of the Night” bonuses and picking up big wins over Kaitlin Young and Raquel Pennington.  She was last seen in the Invicta cage back in April where she took Sarah Kaufman to the limit but was unable to do enough in the eyes of the judges, two of whom scored the fight for Kaufman.  Now ready to make her first appearance as a flyweight, she will look to notch a big win against Jennifer Maia.

Maia (7-2 MMA, 1-0 Invicta) also made her last appearance last month at Invicta FC 5 where she took a unanimous decision over Zoila Gurgel.  It appears though that her performance in that matchup, a clinch-filled affair, was not enough to earn her a title shot outright as she will now have to get through Smith to get her shot at Invicta gold.

Invicta FC 6 takes place on July 13 at the Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri.
