Alistair Overeem vs. Travis Browne has been booked for the opening UFC on FOX 1 show.
The date will be August 17 at TD Garden in Boston, for the first fight card the UFC will hold on their new television deal.
Overeem was forced from this weekend’s UFC 160 event due to injury, and will now make his comeback against Browne following his stunning upset loss to Antonio ‘Big Foot’ Silva. The Dutchman was on the verge of a title shot before the Brazilian’s comeback. The 33 year old must now comeback from his first loss in over five years and prove he is one of the top fighter’s in the UFC’s largest division.
Browne has earned his chance against one of the to fighters in the heavyweight division, after going 5-1-1 in the UFC. ‘Hapa’ recovered from his first loss in MMA with a vicious knockout of Gabriel Gonzaga. He also fell against this weekend’s UFC heavyweight title challenger but was inhibited by tearing his hamstring early in the fight.
The UFC’s highly anticipated return to Boston is slowly beginning to shape up from a fight card perspective. The resurgent Matt Brown gets another tough test against former title challenger Thiago Alves and hometown favourite Joe Lauzon has been booked against Michael Johnson.
