UFC 159 Preview and Picks

UFC 159 Preview and Picks

We are now only a couple of short days away from UFC 159 which will be headlined by a UFC Light Heavyweight Title fight between Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen.

Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen

Well I think its safe to say that Chael is officially in Jon’s head. The mind games played by Sonnen have been nothing short of genius and it seems from the outside at least that he has got to Bones Jones.  The question is will it actually make any difference?

To be honest I don’t think so. Sonnen may have the wrestling advantage but I can’t see him getting close enough to Bones in order to make this advantage beneficial. I see Jones staying on the outside and using his reach to pick Sonnen apart. Expect to see a lot of leg kicks and flash combinations. This fight will be exciting and action packed; but I’m also looking forward to Chael’s post fight interview no matter what the result.

Prediction – Jones defeats Sonnen by TKO in round 2.

Michael Bisping vs. Alan Belcher

Plenty of talk in this one too, the Twitter battle has been a perfect in road into this fight!  These two are pretty evenly matched so it should be a cracking fight. I give the stand up advantage to Belcher but Bisping will do more damage if he can take the fight to the ground. The mental aspect could also be telling in this one, as Bisping tends to choke in the big fights.

Prediction – Belcher defeats Bisping by Unanimous Decision.

Roy Nelson vs. Cheick Kongo

Very good chance this will be a stand up war! We all know Nelson has KO power in his hands and has a granite chin, but Kongo is a rangy Heavyweight who has the ability to cause Big Country all sorts of problems. If Kongo can keep Nelson at distance (ala Werdum) then he could pick Big Country apart and earn a decision; but if Roy gets inside and has free range with his punches then Kongo will no doubt take a nap.

Prediction – Nelson defeats Kongo via KO in round 3.

Phil Davis vs. Vinny Magalhaes

Another instance where we have plenty of pre fight talk! These two clearly don’t like each other and that just adds to the spectacle for us fans. This one seems pretty simple to me; if Davis can keep this standing he should dominate on route to a comfortable victory as he clearly has the better and more versatile stand up. However, if Magalhaes can get it to the ground (either from his back or on top) I have no doubt he will submit Davis.

Prediction – Magalhaes defeats Davis by Submission in round 2.

Jim Miller vs. Pat Healy

Two very good scrappers in this one so I am expecting an action packed fight. Jim Miller is hard-core and actually gets better as a more intense brawl breaks out. He doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses and will be comfortable wherever this fight goes. I’ve seen a fair bit of Healy through his Strikeforce career and he has impressed me greatly. His versatile, has a great chin and can earn a KO in a variety of ways. This is a really good test for both fighters.

Prediction – Miller defeats Healy by Unanimous Decision.

Cody McKenzie defeats Leonard Garcia by Submission.
