Former Ultimate Fighter winner Kelvin Gastelum made a stunning return to the middleweight division, taking out former Strikeforce champion Nate Marquardt at UFC 188Saturday night.
Gastelum, who had trouble making welterweight, stated plans to return to the division, hoping that he got on the good side of UFC officials.
“That’s the plan,” he said, after forcing Marquardt to stop on the stool after the second round. “We’ll get together with the UFC. Hopefully, this performance was good enough to get on their good side.”
Gastelum has won six of seven inside the Octagon, including a win over Uriah Hall in the finals of The Ultimate Fighter. But, in taking out a former UFC title contender, the youngster knows what this will do for his career.
“Without a doubt, this is the best win in my career,” he said. “He’s a former champion, a veteran, and I have a lot of respect for him.”
