Saturday night on UFC on FOX 7, Benson Henderson took a split decision victory over Gilbert Melendez at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. I have re watched this fight and I am not sure if I agree. I scored the first two rounds for Melendez, rounds three and four for Henderson, and final round to Melendez for a score of 48-47.
Melendez dominated in the boxing and grappling exchanges while Henderson landed more kicks and strikes. It seems as though this is Benson’s style as his past 3 title defenses have been all to decision.
Gilbert Melendez is now 21-3 in his MMA career and he is only 31. Poor Gilbert is now going to have to work his way back up the chain. But, he performed well in his UFC debut and myself as I feel many others feel a rematch between Melendez and Henderson would be a great thing. We know that the winner of TJ Grant and Gray Maynard will be getting a title shot next. After that, however, who will it be . The lightweight division is so competitive that it is difficult for fighters at the top to become get a title shot.
There is no reason to think that Melendez will not be back in a title shot again soon. Long as he stays out of injury. This year may just end in a rematch being set up.
