Yushin Okami, who once challenged Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title, has been released from the active roster. He was ranked #6 in the UFC’s rankings.
Okami went 13-5 in 18 UFC bouts, including a 3-1 mark in his last four. He was defeated by Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in his most recent outing.
UFC president Dana White responded to fans on Twitter in response to the decision, saying, “our roster is packed.” He continued with “you will see people get cut and come back. Always been that way.”
Okami could have been a cut casualty due to his contract, as the former contender made $42,000 in base salary for his last fight and $84,000 for his last pay-per-view appearance. Even though title holders of course are paid way more thank his contract. Jon Jones cost the UFC a set $400k just to show.
